In 1919 Gandhiji gave a call for satyagraha against the Rowlatt Act.
The Rowlatt Act gave the British government the authority to arrest people and keep them in prison for up to two years without a trial if they were suspected of sedition. The Act enhanced police powers while restricting fundamental liberties like the right to free speech. Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and others believed that the government had no right to limit people's fundamental liberties. They called the Act "devilish" and "tyrannical." Gandhiji requested that the Indian people observe April 6, 1919, as a day of "humiliation and prayer" and hartal in opposition to this Act.
