In 1940, India’s Muslim league claimed independent states for Muslims. Muslims in the nation's northwest and east were requested to have independent states in a resolution passed by the Muslim League in 1940. According to the Lahore Resolution, the regions were divided into geographically distinct divisions. As in the North-Western and Eastern Zones of (British) India, they should be rearranged into independent states, in which the component entities should be autonomous and sovereign, with any geographical readjustments that may be necessary to group the areas where Muslims form the majority in the population.
