Detailed Solution

In 1946, the length of the tracks had increased to over 765,000 kilometres.
Since the 1850s, as railways expanded, new demands developed. The transportation of imperial armies and colonial trade depended heavily on railways. Hence, wood was required as fuel for locomotives, and sleepers were used to assemble railway tracks. Between 1,760 and 2,000 sleepers were needed for every mile of the railroad track. After the 1860s, the railway network quickly grew. About 25,500 km of track had been built by 1890. The rails' length had risen to more than 765,000 km by 1946. As the railway lines extended across India, more and more trees were cut down, which became a huge environmental concern.
