Bastar kingdom merged with Kanker kingdom in 1947 and became Bastar district in Madhya Pradesh. Again it was divided into three- Kanker, Bastar, and Dantewada, in 1998. In 2001, these became part of Chhattisgarh. Bastar was among the 16 Madhya Pradesh districts that formed a part of the new state of Chhattisgarh. The 1910 rebellion started in the Kanger forest area and soon spread to other parts of the state, including Bastar.
