Detailed Solution

In 1956, an act passed by the Government in Sri Lanka recognised the Sinhala language as the language of the state and disregarded the Tamil language.
The Srilankan Tamils felt alienated and isolated because of the miserable and inferior treatment they got from the government made by the Sinhala community. The Sinhala population was in the majority in Sri Lanka, and they misused their rights and powers while in power in the name of the majority community. Sri Lanka adopted majoritarianism to establish Sinhala’s supremacy, due to which the Sinhala community enjoyed immense power. In 1956, by passing an act, Sinhala was recognised as the only official language of the nation, thus disregarding Srilankan Tamils, their Tamil language and their culture.
