Detailed Solution

In 1956, an Act was passed to recognise Sinhala as the only official language in Sri Lanka.
The two major social groups in Sri Lanka were Sinhalas, constituting 74% of the population, and Tamils, comprising 18% of the population. Other than that, there were 7% of Christians. Since 1948, after Sri Lanka gained independence, the Sinhala leaders, despite being democratically elected, were adopting majoritarian measures to establish Sinhala supremacy by passing an Act in 1956 that made Sinhala the country’s official language policies that favoured the Sinhalas in government jobs and university positions. Then an intermittent insurgency was started by LTTE against the Sri Lankan government on 23 July 1983, which took the shape of a civil war.
