In 1960, Bombay was divided into separate states for Marathi and Gujarati speakers.
Marathi, Malayalam, and Kannada speakers all clamoured for their states. To defend the interests of Telugu speakers, Potti Sriramulu began a hunger strike and demanded the creation of an Andhra state. The newly created state of Andhra was established on October 1st, 1953. It was decided to create compact provinces for speakers of Assamese, Bengali, Oriya, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu. A States Reorganisation Commission was established, and its report was published in 1956. The vast area that spoke Hindi was divided up into different states. Bombay was split into separate states in 1960 for Marathi- and Gujarati-speaking residents. The division of the state of Punjab into Punjab and Haryana took place in 1966.
