Detailed Solution

In 1966 the state of Punjab was divided into Punjab and Haryana.
Followed by the creation of Andhra Pradesh based on linguistic grounds, many other linguistic communities all over India started demanding separate states for the safeguarding of their communities. For this, the government set up a State Reorganisation Commission which submitted a report in the year 1956, recommending that the boundaries of the states should be redrawn. With this, compact provinces of Assamese, Bengali, Oriya, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu speakers were formed. In 1966, Punjab, a bilingual state, was divided into Haryana and Punjab. Now, the Punjabi speakers lived in Punjab and the rest who did not speak Punjabi and rather spoke Haryanvi or Hindi, lived in Haryana.
