In 1966, the state of Punjab was divided into Punjab and Haryana. Some parts of the pre-existing state were added to Himachal Pradesh and a new Union territory Chandigarh was created which became the common capital of both the states. While the state of Punjab is a Sikh majority state, Haryana is a Hindi-speaking or Hindu majority state. There has been a dispute since the creation regarding Chandigarh being the common capital.
