Detailed Solution

In 1966, the state of Punjab was divided into Punjab and Haryana.
Marathi, Malayalam, and Kannada speakers all requested their states. To safeguard the interests of Telugu speakers, Potti Sriramulu went on a hunger strike and demanded the creation of an Andhra state. The new state of Andhra was established on October 1st, 1953. It was decided to create compact provinces for speakers of Assamese, Bengali, Oriya, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu. A States Reorganisation Commission was established, and its report was presented in 1956. Several states made up the vast Hindi-speaking area. Bombay was partitioned into separate Marathi and Gujarati-speaking republics in 1960. The division of Punjab into Punjab and Haryana took place in 1966.
