In 1987, Goa was converted from a union territory to a state. Puducherry was absorbed into the Republic of India after independence from the French administration in 1954, and became the Union Territory of Puducherry. Daman and Diu, as well as Goa, were merged into the Republic of India after the country gained independence from Portuguese domination in 1961. In 1987, Goa was given statehood, making it the first Union Territory to do so. In the year 2020, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu were merged into one Union Territory, named Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Manipur, Tripura, and Himachal Pradesh were granted statehood in the early 1970s.Chandigarh was given the designation of Union Territory.
