Detailed Solution

In 2002, Musharraf held a referendum in Pakistan that granted him a five-year extension in his tenure as President. Parvez Musharraf came to power through a military coup on 12 October 1999. A referendum is a direct vote by the people of a given territory on a proposal, law or political issue. Thus, Musharraf stated that holding the referendum respected democratic law, even though the Pakistani Constitution makes no mention of electing a president by referendum. A referendum allowing Pervez Musharraf to hold the presidency for five years was held in Pakistan on 30 April 2002. The proposal was approved by 97.97% of the voters. However, the opposition boycotted the referendum on the grounds that it was unconstitutional. The Pakistan Human Rights Commission criticised the poll as "totally flawed".
