Detailed Solution

In a serially connected circuit, the distribution of voltage takes place in direct proportion to the resistance. So, drop across the resistance x is equal to the drop across the resistance y. and, the drop across the resistance A is greater than the drop across the resistance B. Now, the potential at the end of a resistor at which current leaves is equal to the potential at the end at which current enters the resistor subtracting the drop across the resistor. So, the potential at a is smaller than the potential at b. Current flows from a higher potential to lower potential. Hence, the direction of current is from b to a.
