In an armed fight, the commander was killed in the 'Fortress of Bastille.
On July 14, 1789, rumours spread in Paris that the king had ordered forces to move into the city and start firing on the population. Approximately 7,000 men and women assembled before the town hall to establish a people's militia. They broke into many government buildings in quest of weapons. Finally, a large group of people marched to the city's eastern boundaries and attacked the Bastille, a fortress jail where they hoped to find hidden ammunition. Even though only seven prisoners were held captive, the commander of the Bastille was killed in the subsequent armed conflict. The Bastille, on the contrary, became universally reviled as a symbol of the king's dictatorial power. The fortress was destroyed, and its stone fragments were sold in marketplaces to anybody who desired a remembrance of its fall.
