In an electric circuit comprising a resistor made of a metallic wire with an ammeter reading, 5 A is connected in series. When the length of the wire is doubled, the reading in the ammeter decreases to half.
We know the resistance of a metallic wire is directly proportional to the length and inversely proportional to the area of the cross-section. R αlA. Therefore, the resistance is also doubled when the length is doubled.
Using Ohm’s law I=VR, we could see that resistance and the current are inversely proportional. Hence the resistance is doubled; the ammeter reading is reduced to half.
