Detailed Solution

In ancient times, Patliputra was the capital of the Magadha Dynasty. In 490 BCE, the monarch of Magadha-Ajatashatru built the ancient city of Patliputra. It served as the capital of Magadha until the first century BCE when it was taken over by his son Udaya. It was also the capital of Chandragupta Maurya. After Ajatashatrus died, his son and successor, Udayin, relocated the Magadhan capital from Rajgir to Pataliputra, which his father had recently reinforced, recognizing the strategic importance of Pataliputra. Pataliputra's location, in addition to being in the heart of two major provinces, made it easy to connect by road with a number of other key cities, including Mathura in the west, Tamralipti in the east, as well as Allahabad, Benaras, Punjab, and Delhi.
