In April 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeswar Dutta threw a bomb at the Legislative Assembly to attack the British.
Many nationalists believed that non-violent resistance to the British could not succeed. Bhagat Singh and Batukeswar Dutta detonated a bomb inside the Legislative Assembly in April 1929. The train Lord Irwin was riding in was the target of an attempted bombing the same year. Bhagat Singh claimed during his trial that he intended a social revolution rather than to promote "the cult of the bomb and pistol". When the colonial authorities tried and executed Bhagat Singh, he was 23 years old.
