In Assam, Adivasi Population is about 70 lakh.
During pre-colonial times, Adivasis were traditionally hunter-gatherers and nomads and lived by both shifting cultivations and also cultivating in one place. But Adivasis are now forced to migrate to live as labourers in plantations, industries, construction sites, and as domestic help. This has been done through economic changes, forest policies and the State and private industries applying political force. From the 1830s, Adivasis from Jharkhand and surrounding areas moved to various plantations in very large numbers. Their stories of migration are filled with hardships, heartbreaks, and torture. India's tea industry became possible only with them in Assam. As a result, there are now 70 lakh Adivasis in Assam alone.
