Detailed Solution

In Awadh, the Revolt of 1857 was led by Begum Hazrat Mahal. Begum Hazrat Mahal's group of supporters rebelled against the British during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. She assumed leadership as the guardian of her minor son, Prince Birjis Qadr, whom she had proclaimed as the monarch (Wali) of Awadh after they won control of Lucknow. She naturally assumed a leading position in the uprising against the British because she was the regent. Begum Hazrat Mahal's main grievance was that the English East India Company had casually destroyed mosques to make room for highways. She made fun of the British assertion that they allowed religious freedom in a declaration that was made in the final days of the uprising.
