Detailed Solution

Steam is applied to red-hot coke at extremely high temperatures to cause the reaction between water and coal. The result is water gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
By passing water gas and surplus steam over the catalysts iron (III) oxide and chromium (III) oxide at extremely high temperatures, carbon monoxide is changed into carbon dioxide.

Hydrogen gas is separated from carbon monoxide by passing it through water at a pressure of 30 atmospheres; unlike hydrogen gas, carbon monoxide is absorbed in water.
