In England, the first factories were established during 1730s.
The number of manufacturers, however, did not start to increase until the late eighteenth century. Cotton served as the initial representation of the new era. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, production increased dramatically. 2.5 million pounds of raw cotton were imported by Britain in 1760 to support its cotton industry. The value of this shipment reached 22 million pounds by 1787. This rise was attributed to several modifications made to the production process. The efficiency of each stage of the production process (carding, twisting and spinning, and rolling) was improved by several improvements in the eighteenth century. This increased productivity per worker, making it possible for each employee to produce more, and enabled the manufacture of stronger threads and yarn. At this exact point, Richard Arkwright built the cotton mill. Until then, cloth production happened in village families and was dispersed over the countryside. However, the pricey brand-new equipment could then be bought, installed, and maintained in the mill. All processes within the mill were centralized under a single roof and administration.
