In Europe, the 1830s were times of immense economic suffering. The initial half of the nineteenth century saw immense population growth across Europe. In most countries, there were more job searchers than job openings. People from rural (village) areas frequently moved to the metropolitan centres in search of work and to live in overcrowded slums during the nineteenth century. Small-town producers were up against fierce competition from imports of inexpensive machine-made goods from England. In Europe, the manufacturing of textiles was primarily done in houses or small workshops and was only partially mechanised because it was primarily a home-based industry. As a result, the artisans and weavers suffered huge losses.
