In France, a bibliothèque Bleue was printed as a low-priced book. It is a collection of books for reading or study or the structure or place in which such a collection is stored. The word derives from the Latin liber, which means "book," but bibliotheca, a Latinized Greek word, is the basis in German, Russian, and Romance languages. Similar to the English chapbook and the German Volksbuch, the Bibliothèque Bleue (French for "blue library") is a type of ephemera and popular literature published in Early Modern France (c. 1602–c. 1830). These are inexpensive compact books printed in France. These were printed on low-quality paper and had cheap blue covers. The Bibliotheque Bleue literary genre drew readers from many walks of life in France and became well-known. This writing's subject matter was first limited to local ephemera but swiftly extended to neighbouring cities and territories, gaining tremendous popularity.
