Detailed Solution

In Germany, large landowners were known as Junkers.
Nationalism in Europe began to disassociate itself from its links to democracy and revolution after 1848. Conservatives frequently demonised nationalist sentiments to consolidate state power and gain political dominance in Europe. This may be seen in the process leading to the unification of Italy and Germany as a nation-state. Germans of the middle class had strong nationalistic sentiments, and in 1848 they attempted to merge the several German confederations into one nation-state ruled by an elected parliament. However, with the help of the powerful landowners known as the Junkers, the monarchy and military suppressed this liberal attempt at nation-building.
