Rebellion on Gudem Hill was headed by Alluri Sitaram Raju. Raju had the rebels spellbound, declaring that Raju was a manifestation of God. Raju encouraged people to wear khadi and stop drinking while praising the virtues of Mahatma Gandhi and the Non-Cooperation Movement. However, he also argued that force, not non-violence, was the only way to free India.
