Detailed Solution

The history of India has been divided into three parts. The first attempt to divide the history of  India was made by a Scottish economist and political philosopher, James Mill. Mill divided the history of India into three periods- Hindu, Muslim and British. He divided the periods based on the religion of the ruler. However, this classification was rejected by many Indian historians. They, therefore, made their classification and divided the historical period into three divisions- Ancient, Mediaeval and  Modern. However, this classification has been borrowed from the west. The periodisation of history is important to mark the characteristics of the time.
