- Proliferative Phase: The proliferative phase follows the menstrual phase. It typically occurs in the days immediately after menstruation and can last until ovulation. During this phase, rising levels of estrogen stimulate the growth and thickening of the endometrial lining in preparation for potential implantation of a fertilized egg.
- Ovulatory Phase: The ovulatory phase occurs around the middle of the menstrual cycle when a mature follicle in the ovary releases an egg (ovulation). This phase is triggered by a surge in luteinising hormone (LH).
- Luteal Phase: Following ovulation, the luteal phase begins. It lasts for about 10-16 days and is characterised by the corpus luteum, which forms from the ruptured follicle and produces progesterone. Progesterone maintains the thickened endometrial lining and prepares it for possible embryo implantation.
