Gandhiji was shocked by this. He vehemently opposed this system and argued in favour of the universal adult franchise, which grants everyone the right to vote. Gandhiji stated that it is unjust to deny the right to vote to those who are poor and illiterate in the newspaper Young India in 1931. It is unacceptable to deny someone the right to vote because they are impoverished or ignorant.
