In India, in a local government, at least one-third of all positions are reserved for women. The Indian Constitution has made a provision for reservation regarding the upliftment of oppressed classes of people and backward and suppressed castes. It also provides reservations for women. The aim is to provide equal opportunities and ensure equal participation in government bodies. It has been provided by an amendment made in the Indian Constitution in 1992, which states that one-third of seats are reserved for women in all local bodies. That constitutes about 33.33% of the total seats.
