In India, indentured labourers were hired under Contracts.
The British wanted labour to construct railways to maintain their trade. The British wanted labourers to work in mines and plantations. But at the same time, they also knew that the labour they would hire would be working in very poor circumstances and would be ill-treated. So to avoid his escape, the British tend to sign a contract with Indian labourers. The British tended to show a very progressive picture to Indians and masqueraded as their well-wishers acting as employers. But instead, they were making them indentured labor, which can also be termed slavery, in which a contract is needed.
