In India, seats are reserved for women in Panchayats. Of the seats, one-third, which makes 33.33 per cent, are specifically reserved for women. They are to be filled by women candidates only. It has been done to increase the presence of women in the political arena. It will also enhance the inclusiveness of the positions, and women could get opportunities to be a part of administrative bodies. However, it is found in many places that even when women get assigned to the posts, it is not women candidates who administer, but some male counterparts in the family do so. To gain a seat, they contest their wives or other women of the family.
