The printing press first came to Goa with Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century.
Jesuit priests learnt Goa's language, Konkani, and printed much literature. Jesuit priests printed various books in Konkani and Kannada languages. A total of 54 books were printed in the native language of Goa, that is, Konkani and Kanara. Catholic priests also printed the first Tamil book in 1579 at Cochin, and in 1713, the first Malayalam book was printed. The Dutch Protestant Missionaries printed 32 Tamil texts by 1710, which were the translation of older words.
