In India, the printing press first arrived in Goa with Portuguese missionaries in the mid-sixteenth century. Jesuit priests learned Konkani and published several tracts. About 50 books in the Kanara and Konkani languages had been printed by 1674. The first Tamil book was produced in Cochin in 1579 by Catholic priests, while the first Malayalam book was printed there in 1713. Dutch Protestant missionaries issued 32 Tamil texts by the year 1710, several of which were translations of earlier works.
