In India’s federal system, the state government has the power to legislate on all those subjects which are included in the State List. The Constitution of India provided a three-fold distribution of legislative powers between the Union Government and State Governments. The constitution prescribes three lists - Union List, State List, and Concurrent List. The central government has the power to make laws on the union list, the state government has the power to make laws on the state list, and both the centre and the state government have the power to make laws on the concurrent list.
