In Kheda, Gujarat, Patidar peasants organised non-violent campaigns against the high land revenue demand of the British.
Due to droughts, the year 1918 saw poor crops in Gujarat's Kheda district. According to the law, if the yield was less than a quarter of the usual output, the farmers were entitled to a remission of the revenue. However, the government disallowed any exemption from paying land taxes. Gandhi directed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to lead the farmers in a demonstration against tax collecting after the famine. The movement received support from people of all castes and ethnic groups in the district. The government finally gave up and made a few concessions to the farmers.
