In Ladakh, people depend on the melting snow for drinking water. Ladakh is a desert region in Jammu and Kashmir's eastern Himalayas. Since this area doesn't get much rain and most of the year is covered in snow, very little agriculture is feasible there. There aren't many trees in the area that can grow. During the summer, locals rely on the snowmelt to provide drinking water. The sheep kept here are unique because they generate pashmina wool, prized worldwide. Because of how valuable this wool is, pashmina shawls are very expensive. The sheep's wool is meticulously collected by the Ladakhi people and sold to traders in Kashmir. The majority of Pashmina shawls are made in Kashmir.
