In many areas of present day Bihar and Jharkhand Chero chiefdoms had emerged by the twelfth century. The Chero are an Indian caste located in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. The Chero community claims to have originated as a tribal people. The Chero are simply one of many tribal people that inhabit the southeastern portion of Uttar Pradesh, including the Bhar, Kol, and Pasi. In 1591, Raja Man Singh, one of Akbar's most famous generals, fought and destroyed the Cheros. They took a lot of treasure, yet this loss did not entirely vanquish Cheros. Mughal soldiers, led by Aurangzeb, seized several Chero castles and subjugated the tribe.
