In March 1859, thousands of ryots in Bengal refused to plant indigo.
Ryots flocked to join the uprising as it spread. They attacked indigo factories with swords, spears, bows and arrows. Those employed by the planters were socially isolated, and gomasthas, or planter's agents, who came to collect their rent were beaten. Ryots vowed they would no longer accept indigo-sowing advances and would not be intimidated by the planters' lathiyals- The planters retained their lathi-wielding strongmen.
