Detailed Solution

Mature mammalian erythrocytes carry out anaerobic respiration. They lack mitochondria, which are the organelles responsible for aerobic respiration in cells. Instead, erythrocytes rely on glycolysis, an anaerobic process, to produce ATP for their energy needs.

During glycolysis, glucose is broken down into pyruvate, and a small amount of ATP is generated. Since erythrocytes lack mitochondria, they cannot proceed with oxidative phosphorylation, which requires oxygen and occurs in the mitochondria. As a result, pyruvate is converted into lactate in erythrocytes under anaerobic conditions.

This anaerobic metabolism allows erythrocytes to produce ATP without the need for oxygen, which is crucial for their function in transporting oxygen throughout the body.
