Detailed Solution

A 200-year-old method of drawing water from springs and streams using bamboo pipes is widely used in Meghalaya. Water enters the bamboo pipe system at a rate of around 18 to 20 litres per minute, which is then reduced to 20 to 80 drops per minute at the plant. In Shillong, Meghalaya, rooftop rainwater collecting is the most popular method. It is remarkable that despite receiving the most rainfall globally, Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, located 55 kilometres from Shillong, experience a severe water deficit. In the city, almost every home has a rooftop rainwater collection system. Rooftop water harvesting provides around 15–25% of the household's total water needs.
