Traditionally they moved between Kaokoland and nearby Ovamboland. Apart from herding animals, they also traded, selling skin, meat, and other products in neighbouring markets. However, the arrival of European colonisers ended their sources of income. The colonisers enforced a new territorial boundary system, restricting their movements over extensive areas seeking good pastures, thus confining them in their special reserves. They were also prohibited from entering the markets of European settlers.
