In phylum Arthropoda, the class Insecta comprises the maximum number of economically important species.

Arthropods form the largest phylum of the Animal kingdom. So far about 900,000 species are known by man. The class Insecta contains about 7,75,000 species which includes the maximum number of economically important species that are beneficial from a human viewpoint. They pollinate flowering plants, produce useful substances, control pest insects, act as scavengers, and serve as food for other animals.

Some economically important insects are:

  • Apis (Honey bee)- Provide honey and beeswax and also help in pollination.
  • Bombyx (silkworm)- Provide silk fiber.
  • Laccifer (lac insect)- Produce lac resin.
