In pre-colonial times Maasai was divided into two social categories Warriors and Elders.
The elders of the Maasai society formed the ruling group, took the decisions on the affairs of the community, and settled the disputes. In this community, cattle raids were also held. On the other hand, warriors were society's youngsters and were responsible for protecting the Maasai tribe. There was a tradition among Maasais that to be a warrior, the young had to show their potential by raiding the cattle of the other group.
