Khokhar is a Persian word that denotes a bloodthirsty person. Most Khokhars are Muslims and adhere to Islam. The Khokhars embraced Islam as a result of Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar's influence. The mediaeval Persian historian Firishta described the Khokhar people at that time as a "barbaric race without religion and morality." Muhammad Ghori waged numerous expeditions in Punjab against the Khokhars until he was assassinated in the Salt Range town of Dhamiak in March 1206.
