Q.

In R3, let Lbe a straight line passing through the origin. Suppose that all the points on L are at a constant distance from the two planes P1:x+2yz+1=0 and P2:2xy+z1=0. Let M be the locus of the feet of the perpendiculars drawn from the points on L to the plane

P1. Which of the following points lie (s) on M ?

Detailed Solution

As L is at a constant distance from P1 and P2L is parallel to both P1 and P2

If direction ratios of L are a, b, c then

a+2bc=02ab+c=0a21=b1+2=c14a1=b3=c5

So equation of line L is

x1=y3=z5=λ (say)

A point on L is (λ,3λ,5λ)

Let I(α, β, γ) be foot of perpendicular of P(λ,3λ,5λ) on the plane

then IP is normal to the plane P1. Therefore

αλ1=β+3λ2=γ+5λ1=k (say)

α=λ+k,β=2k3λ,γ=k5λ

As I lies on P1

(λ+k)+2(2k3λ)(k5λ)+1=06k=1k=16

Thus, α=λ16,β=3λ13,γ=5λ+16

M=λ16,3λ13,5λ+16λR

For λ=0,16,13,16M

and for λ=16,0,56,23M
