All political parties were illegal in Russia before 1914. The Russian Social Democratic Workers Party was founded in 1898 by social workers who respected Marx's views. However, because of the state police, they had to operate as a criminal organization. He built a newspaper, mobilized workers, and organized strikes. Some Russian socialists felt that the Russian farmers' custom of dividing the land from time to time made them natural socialists. So farmers, not workers, would be a great force for change, and Russia could become socialist faster than other countries. Socialists were active in the countryside in the late nineteenth century. They formed the Socialist Revolution Party in 1900. The group fought for farmers' rights and demanded that the land of the nobility be transferred to the farmers. The Social Democrats disagreed with the Socialist Revolutionaries about farmers.
