When Irwin rejected his eleven demands, along with 78 of his dependable volunteers, Mahatma Gandhi began his infamous salt march. From Gandhiji's ashram at Sabarmati to the Gujarati coastal town of Dandi, the march covered more than 240 miles. For 24 days, the volunteers averaged 10 miles per day of walking. Wherever Mahatma Gandhi went, crowds of people flocked to hear him speak. He explained what swaraj meant and encouraged them to resist the British in a nonviolent manner.
