Detailed Solution

Portuguese came to India in search of spices. The Portuguese initially arrived in India in search of spices in Calicut, on the Kerala coast in southwest India. Calico (from Calicut) was subsequently applied to all cotton fabrics, and it originated with the cotton textiles that the traders carried back to Europe with the spices. Vasco Da Gama of Portugal was the first to discover a sea route connecting Europe and India in 1498 AD. In 1500, the first Portuguese factory was established in India's Calicut. On May 20, 1498, Vasco da Gama arrived in Calicut on the Malabar Coast, marking the beginning of Portuguese interaction with the Indian subcontinent.
