In South-Eastern Europe after 1871, the most serious source of Nationalist tension was in the area called the Balkans. Both socially and geographically, the Balkans are quite diverse. The Slavs started asserting their nationality, which was based on long-lost independence. Internal wars between the Slavic republics, each of which desired more territory from the other, were frequent. This region also became a point of conflict for other powerful nations after the Ottomans withdrew. Russians, Germans, Britons, and Austro-Hungarians were among them. They all desired to impose their authority on the area. As a result, the region has turned into a perpetual conflict zone. It ultimately resulted in the First World War.
