Like other South Asian countries, it has a diverse population. The bulk of the population speaks Sinhala, roughly 74 per cent, and the rest speak Tamil. Christians comprise 7% of the people and speak Tamil and Sinhala. Sri Lanka's Christian population has decreased from 10% in 1891 to 7.6% in the most recent census. In Sri Lanka, Christianity is a minority religion. Hinduism accounts for 12.6 per cent of the population, Buddhism for 70.1 per cent, and Muslims for 9.7 per cent.
